Why won't my cruise control work on 2007 ford escape?

When I press the buttons nothing happens...no cruise...no dash light...nothing! My mechanic says he doesn't know how many hours or how much it will cost to fix. I've googled it and I know about the fuse box and the connection under the engine cover and I'm female. It can't be that complicated.
