Why is it called a Geometric Progression?

I understand the etymology of the word geometry, 'measuring the earth' is plausibly related to the abstract idea of geometry. But how are either of those concepts related to a so-called 'geometric' progression, a sequence in which term is the previous term multiplied by some common factor?
