What's the difference between proletarian and proletariat?

A proletarian was a person who really had no status, and did not own property; the "proletariat" in Marxist theory was simply all those people collectively. They were the poorest class, and often unskilled, ordinary laborers, as opposed to those who DID own things - the "capitalists."
