Please explain the etymology of burglar?

This is saying that it started in the 1540's and was shortened from the Middle English word "burgulator" and combined with the Old French "burgeor" and Latin "burgator" meaning to break open. Its relationship to borough seems to come from the fact that the word was used to "break open the castle" or home, and a borough is a community of homes.
